Find your starting vest

How to progress your load over time

Your starting vest comes from your body weight and how active you already are. A sensible range is 5 to 15 per cent of body weight.

  • New, returning after a break, or older: start around 10 per cent, and read the caution below.
  • Already walk regularly and carry load comfortably: start around 15 per cent.

These bands match our size and weight guide.

60 to 75 kg132 to 165 lb
75 to 90 kg165 to 200 lb Step up: Elite 30 lb / 13.5 kg
90 to 110 kg200 to 245 lb

If you are older, new to load, pregnant, or recovering from injury or surgery, start at the lower end and check with your doctor first. A weighted vest is not a medical device.

Progressing from here. Each vest is one fixed weight, so adding load means stepping up to the next vest, once the current one starts to feel easy. Elite, 30 lb / 13.5 kg, suits well conditioned heavier walkers, around 200 to 245 lb / 90 to 110 kg, who already carry load comfortably. For everyone else it is a step up you grow into over time, not a first vest.

Good to know

Common questions

Will it bounce or rub on a long walk?

No. The Steady-Load iron-sand panels sit flat and close to your torso, and the dual Velcro waist straps plus a front buckle lock the fit, so once it is snug there is very little movement. The 2 cm shoulder padding spreads the load so it does not dig in.

How do I choose my weight?

A sensible range is 5 to 15 per cent of your body weight, depending on your fitness and how hard you want to push. Start at the lower end if you are new, returning after a break, or older, and work up as you adapt. That usually means Beginner (10lb / 4.5kg) or Intermediate (12lb / 5.5kg) for a first vest. Each vest is a single fixed weight, so pick the one that suits you now and step up to a heavier vest later. Try the size and weight guide for a table by body weight.

How does it fit, and does it fit men and women?

It goes on over your head and cinches with two Velcro waist straps and a front buckle across a wide range of body types, so a single size suits most people. The open sides keep your arms free. It fits men and women; see the sizing and fit guide for measurements.

Is it safe if I am older or new to this?

Start light and build up gradually. Many older and newer walkers begin at Beginner (10lb / 4.5kg) or Intermediate (12lb / 5.5kg). Walking is a weight-bearing activity, and research suggests weight-bearing exercise supports bone and muscle health over time. A vest is not a medical device. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or are recovering from injury or surgery, check with your doctor first.

Warranty, returns, and shipping?

Every vest is covered by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects and faults (normal wear and tear is not covered), plus a 30-day money-back guarantee: wear it on real walks and, if it is not right, send it back within 30 days for a full refund. Shipping is free worldwide with fast dispatch. Return postage is your responsibility unless the vest arrived faulty or incorrect.

Where does this go after my first vest?

Where you start is not where you finish. The vest works because your body adapts to the load, and that adaptation is the signal to add more.

Weeks 1 to 4. The same route feels harder from the first walk. Heavier breathing, legs working more, nothing else about your routine changed.

Weeks 4 to 12. The vest starts to feel light. Most people read that as the vest not working. It is the opposite. Your body has adapted to the load, so the same walk is now doing less than it was.

That is your step-up point. Every HEFT vest is a single fixed weight, which is what lets the panels sit flat against your torso without shifting or bouncing over a 30 minute walk. Adding load means moving to the next vest, not loosening this one.

The path: Beginner (10lb) or Intermediate (12lb), then Pro (16lb), then Advanced (20lb), then Elite (30lb). Most people spend three to six months at each step. Elite is not a starting point for anyone.

Who it is for

It is for anyone who wants more from the movement they already do. Older adults adding gentle resistance to stay strong for daily life. Active and athletic people who want their walks, runs and everyday sessions to ask a little more without adding time. Anyone working on their fitness or general health. And people managing their weight who want the same walk or session to take more effort. The vest adds load, so your body works a little harder over the same distance. You do not need to be an athlete, and you do not need to be older.

What is it made of?

The load is iron sand, sealed into slim panels across the front and back rather than loose steel plates. That keeps the profile slim and moulds the weight to your torso, with no loose plates to rattle or shift. The shoulder straps carry 2 cm of padding.

How do I care for it?

Wipe the shell with a damp cloth and mild soap after sweaty sessions, then let it air dry fully before storing. Do not machine wash or tumble dry it. Press the Velcro straps closed onto themselves between walks so they stay grippy.

What the load does

The same walk, asking a little more of you

A HEFT vest does not change your route or your time. It adds an even load to the walk you already do, so each step carries a bit more. Here is the difference, drawn simply and kept honest.

Same walk, no vest

Your body carries its own weight. This is already good, weight-bearing movement.

Baseline load

Same walk + HEFT

An even 4.5 to 13.5kg sits close to your torso, adding load through your hips and legs.

Increased load
Walking is a weight-bearing activity, and health authorities note that weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise helps support bone and muscle health over time. A weighted vest adds load to that walk. The benefit comes from being consistent and building up gradually, not from any single session, and a vest is not a medical device or a treatment for any condition. If you have osteoporosis, low bone density, or another health condition, check with your doctor first. Sources: National Institute on Aging · NIH Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases (NIAMS)
